This is Dream Vision by Albrecht Dürer (1525)
Apparently it is "the first known depiction of an artist’s personal dream in Western art".
Amazing. I find it astounding that it took until 1525 for someone to draw a dream - at least this is the earliest known piece to have survived. If someone had asked me to guess the date of the first known Western depiction of an artist's dream in the Western world... I would have guessed 1,000 B.C. Some ancient, far away time. Even that feels too modern!
Perhaps we did not value our dreams. Or is the West that disconnected from its subconscious?
